TORRINGTON — A proposed new dress code could impact your future middle school student.
New dress code samples will be unveiled at a meeting of the Board of Education’s Policy Committee tonight, May 24.
The committee will meet at Torrington Middle School at 7 p.m. to discuss potential modifications to a dress code that is largely unenforced.
Superintendent Christopher Leone has said in previous board meetings that some of the problems that exist in both the middle school and the high school would be lessened, and the need for a school uniform wouldn’t exist if the district’s dress code was enforced.
"The dress code policy is still at a policy committee level," Leone said. "I have been asked by the board to form a policy and present it to the committee."
I bid to go to a set school uniform for the high school was defeated at a meeting earlier this month. Board member Andrew Nargi had been pushing for a dress code at Torrington High School in hopes it would resolve some of the distractions at the school.
At that meeting, policy committee members rejected the proposal of school uniforms for the high school that would have gone into effect in the fall.
It was decided however, that a dress code policy for sixth grade students be considered for the meeting tonight. Leone will also provide samples of the clothing that can be purchased at almost any store. The plan calls for the students to wear solid colors.
After the superintendent spent a day in the high school as a student, Leone said he saw numerous violations of the current dress code which bans chains and studs among other things.
